At The Dental Offices of Alexander DiFilippo, D.D.S.
in Wooster, OH
, we provide root canals and tooth extractions
as needed. Root canals can save teeth that have damaged, diseased or dead pulp, but are otherwise viable to your mouth. However, sometimes the tooth is unable to saved and simply needs to be removed. After examining your tooth, the dentist will recommend the most appropriate treatment method based on his professional judgment.
The procedure for a root canal is fairly simple. The dentist will numb the area, make an opening in the affected tooth, and remove the diseased or dead pulp. After the pulp is removed, the pulp chambers will be carefully cleaned so that no bacteria is left behind. The pulp chambers are filled with a dental material that replaces your damaged pulp. A crown will then be placed on top of the tooth to restore its appearance and strength.
If the dentist determines that the tooth cannot be saved, you will need to have the tooth extracted. First, the dentist will numb the area to help you avoid discomfort. After numbing the area, he will use a lever-like appliance known as an elevator to loosen your tooth while it's still in its socket. Then a tool called a forceps will be used to extract the tooth. You may feel some pressure while this is happening, but no pain. After your extraction, Dr. DiFilippo will discuss your options with you.
